Police seek witnesses to attack in Martin Place

Detectives are calling for witnesses after a taxi driver was assaulted and two cabs damaged in a terrifying mob-style attack in Martin Place overnight.

Police say a group of males and females, described as being of Pacific Islander appearance, became involved in an altercation outside a licensed premises at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Martin Place at around 1.30am.


During the incident, it’s alleged the group damaged two taxis, by smashing mirrors and jumping on one of the vehicles, before one taxi driver, aged 43, was punched through his open window.

He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment to minor lacerations and bruising to his face.

Three males were arrested at the scene however later released without charge, pending further inquiries.

Investigators have requested CCTV from several locations and are seeking any witnesses to come forward.
