Police step up tram patrols after guards bashed in alcohol-fueled attacks

POLICE patrols will be stepped up on Gold Coast trams after two security guards were viciously bashed in separate alcohol-fueled attacks over the weekend.

Southport Magistrates Court heard detail of the two vicious attacks this morning.

On Sunday morning, Southport man Joel Broughton, 25, was allegedly asleep on a tram when a guard woke him up and asked him to get off when it stopped at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Broughton then allegedly unleashed an unprovoked attack on the guard, knocking him to the ground in a fit of rage.

It’s further alleged that Broughton continued his vicious assault on the guard, beating him about the head as he lay defenseless on the ground before running off with his security identification.

The guard sustained non-life threatening head and face injuries and was treated at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Meanwhile, Justin Robertson, 21, also fronted court this morning, charged with assaulting a tram guard in Surfers Paradise.

The court was told Robertson was heavily intoxicated at the time he allegedly let fly a flurry of punches on the guard.

Both men were bailed on the condition they do not approach their victims and do not use public transport.

They’ll both re-appear before the courts on February 3.
