Portugal claim Euro16 victory over France with Ronaldo on sidelines

Portugal has taken out the Euro 2016 final over France and they did it all while star Cristiano Ronaldo sat on the sidelines.

The football superstar went down under Dimitri Payet’s ninth-minute challenge and was twice forced off to receive treatment on his knee before he was eventually stretchered off the field in tears midway through the first half.

There wasn’t a lot of action in the match, with scores locked at nil-all at the final siren.

Just at things look destined for a penalty shootout, Portugal’s substitute Eder found the back of the net in the 109th minute at the Stade de France to grab a 1-0 victory.

“Ronaldo said ‘you must score the winning goal’,” substitute Eder said after the match.

“It was great to score the winning goal but what was decisive was the team performance.”

The victory is Portugal’s first major international title.
