Possible clue in search for missing backpacker from Byron

A CAP has reportedly been found in bushland in Byron Bay as the search for Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez continues.

The baseball cap was discovered by volunteers ten days ago, the Daily Telegraph reports.

It’s believed to have been found around the same location as Theo’s last known mobile phone ping and is reportedly similar to the cap the 18-year-old was wearing before he disappeared.

It has been handed in to police and is being examined.

Mr Hayez hasn’t been seen since he left the popular Cheeky Monkey Bar in Byron Bay on Friday, May 31.

He wasn’t reported missing until June 6 when staff at the hostel he was staying in realised he hadn’t returned.

Police suspended the search for Theo about two weeks ago, however an investigation remains ongoing.

The teen’s parents told Belgian news station RTBF that they believe their son may have been abducted and that they’re not giving up hope that he may still be alive.

“Maybe Theo could have been kidnapped, drugged. He may be a prisoner somewhere where there is no electricity,” they said.
