Possum Magic celebrated in colourful coin set

Much-loved Australian author Mem Fox says she’s thrilled to see her children’s classic, Possum Magic, celebrated through a coin set.

The story of Hush and Grandma Poss is one that has been read in bedrooms and classrooms across the country since first hitting bookshelves in 1983.

The accompanying water colour ‘whimsical illustrations’, by Julie Vivas, are just as iconic as the story, and are the centrepiece for the coins.

Four $1 coins and three colour-printed $2 coins retell the adventure of Hush and Grandma Poss and are accompanied by a copper 1c coin with a unique design.

Ms Fox said she had kept the exciting news a secret since finding out about the tribute last year.

“I was beside myself!” she gushed.

“I could not believe that this was happening to my book of all books. It was very, very thrilling.

“And I thought “my goodness, it’s not often a book turns into money”. It’s like magic!”

Each set is packaged in a Possum Magic themed folder and is now available through the Royal Australian Mint.

While the $2 design will be in circulation at Woolworths supermarkets.
