Possum stops traffic on Surfers Paradise Boulevard

A possum found himself behind bars at the weekend after sending traffic into chaos by crossing Surfers Paradise Boulevard.

The friendly marsupial – who police nicknamed ‘Cobber’ – became frightened by the cars while crossing the road on Sunday night and scurried into the engine bay of a car that had slowed down to avoid him.

Surfers Paradise Police were called in to manage the situation, as the car was blocking the road and causing a hazard to other traffic, as well as the G:Link and pedestrians.

Police say they were able to persuade ‘Cobber’ out of the engine bay, before a number of bystanders helped to capture him in a makeshift trap made from a bin and a bread tray.

‘Cobber’ was taken to the Animal Emergency Service at Carrara where he was taken care of by veterinary staff.
