Power has been restored to more than 2000 homes and businesses in the area, with just 261 customers still affected.

One woman told Gold Coast Weather & News Together that her family was forced to run out of their Ocean Street house when their electrical items started to explode shortly after 8pm.

“The house went up in flames one street down, we all had to vacate the house, everything electrical was exploding,” she said.

“It was the scariest thing ever, and when we left the house, the street lights all exploded.”

It remains unclear when power to the worst affected streets around Dudley Street will be switched back on.

Meanwhile, police are on scene of an accident at Monaco Street, Broadbeach Waters where a car has slammed into a powerpole.

It’s understood the vehicle crashed into the pole after clipping a number of other cars around 10.40pm.
