Powerful quake recorded near Papua New Guinea

A POWERFUL earthquake has been recorded off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

According to Geoscience Australia, the quake struck at a depth of 436 kilometres roughly 30 kilometres east-northeast of Namatania.

Preliminary reports have the quake measuring in at 6.7 on the Richter scale.

The Bureau of Meteorology says there is NO tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.

At this stage, there have been no reports of any damage or injuries sustained as a result of the tremor.
