Seqwater’s announced it plans to spend up to $900 million to upgrade Wivenhoe and Somerset dams.
The news comes after Qld and northern NSW were affected by ex Tropical Cyclone Debbie.
Fairfax reports that Wivenhoe no longer meets the national design standards for large dams, despite more than $100 million in upgrades.

The plan is for Somerset Dam upgrades to begin in 2022 and at Wivenhoe in 2025.
Seqwater’s acting Chief Executive Jim Pruss said people in Brisbane and Ipswich and surrounding areas would have their first chance to see how the upgrades could impact them “later this year”.
The upgrades could include raising the height of the walls at both dams and a possible new spillway at Wivenhoe.
