Qld man charged over horrifying sex attacks

An 18-year-old man is due to face court today charged over the violent rape of a Korean woman and the attempted rape of a Japanese woman in the Cairns CBD.

The horrifying attacks occurred just one hour apart, in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police say it’s alleged the man dragged a 21-year-old Korean woman into bushes and sexually assaulted her around 1.00am.

Just one hour later, a 28-year-old Japanese woman was riding a bicycle down Aplin Street, near a local shopping centre, when the same man grabbed her, pushing her off her bike and onto the ground.

The man punched her in the head and face but fled when another man walking nearby heard the woman’s screams.

Police launched a major search and located the man hiding in mud near the Esplanade boardwalk.

Both women were transported to hospital for treatment to injuries sustained during the terrifying attacks.

The man has been charged with five counts of common assault, four counts of rape, and one count each of attempted rape, deprivation of liberty, torture, sexual assault, assault with intent to commit rape, and robbery using personal violence.

He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court this morning.
