Police officer’s fingers severed during arrest of wanted man

A Queensland police officer has lost the tips of two fingers whilst trying to arrest a wanted man.

The gruesome incident happened just before 2pm on Tuesday at a house on Riverway Drive in Kelso.

Police said officers attempted to apprehend the 29-year-old when he tried to drive out of the property through several gates and fences.

“It will be further alleged the man’s vehicle rammed into a police vehicle, crushing the police officer’s hand between the two vehicles,” police said in a statement.

The officer was flown to Brisbane for emergency surgery, however ended up losing the tips of two fingers.

The wanted Rowes Bay man has since been charged with three counts of serious assault police officer, three counts of wilful damage, three counts of driving a motor vehicle without a driver licence, three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of driving a motor vehicle on a road and failing to stop at a road incident, and one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm, failing to stop a motor vehicle, wilful damage of police property, and possessing dangerous drugs.

He is due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court tomorrow.
