Qld set to be hit by a cyclone Xmas Eve

The Weather Bureau warns there is a more than 50 per-cent chance a cyclone may hit north Queensland and/or the Northern Territory on or around Christmas Eve.

A statement said there is a high risk that a cyclone will develop in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and the western Cape York Peninsula.

The risk factor is expected to climb from low on Monday, to moderate on Tuesday and high on Wednesday.

On Christmas Eve on the Gold Coast there is an 80 per-cent chance of rain, a thunderstorm is also forecast and an expected top temperature of 27 degrees.  Similar temps are forecast for Christmas Day, but only showers are on the cards.
