QLD VOTES | Pre-poll centres to open across the Gold Coast today!

Voting for the Queensland State Election will get underway today, with early voting centres swinging open their doors across the Gold Coast this morning.

It means those who don’t want to face crowds and vote on election day can still cast their ballot from today.

Pre-poll centres are being opened two weeks earlier than usual this year, with officials expecting a record number of people to vote before election day due to COVID.

Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said everyone has a role to play to ensure it’s done in a safe manner.

“The ECQ wants all electors who are voting in person to have a streamlined and COVID-safe voting experience,” Mr Vidgen said.

“There are some very simple and proven steps we can all take to ensure voting is done easily and safely… We ask electors to plan the way they’ll have their say in the 2020 State general election.

“This means thinking about their vote before they get to the polling booth, bringing their Voter Information Card if they have one, staying 1.5 metres apart when voting, using hand sanitiser, and bringing a pen or pencil if they wish.”

Mr Vidgen also reiterated that it is up to us about whether or not we take “how-to-vote cards” being handed out by campaign workers at the polling booths.

There’s 16 early voting centres across the Gold Coast, which open from 9am to 6pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

While there’s extended hours for Tuesday and Thursday, with centres to remain open from 9am to 9pm.

The Queensland Election is set to take place on Saturday, October 31.

Could the Electoral Commission have put a polling booth in a more out-of-way location than Johnson Street? I met several people wandering about Southport CBD looking for the polling booth, expecting it to be in a central location. How are people without transport ever going to get there!
