Ashleigh Barty has become the first Australian woman in almost 50 years to claim the world number one ranking.
The Queenslander has taken her third title of the 2019 season overnight at the Birmingham Classic.
She thrashed Germany’s Julia Goerges 6-3, 7-5 to win the final, and her top seeded status.

The event is a precursor for Wimbledon, which will kick off on July 1.
Barty, 23, is the fifth Australian to take the number one world ranking, and now joins the likes of Evonne Goolagong Cawley, John Newcombe, Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt.
“It’s an amazing place to be in (No.1) but certainly nothing changes.
“I have support and love coming from all over the world.
“It’s been incredible the amount of support that I have received, particularly from Australians,” Barty said.
