Quiksilver Pro kicks off at Duranbah

THE world’s best surfers have started hitting the water on the Gold Coast with the Quiksilver Pro called on this morning.

Competition has gone mobile today and has made the move from Snapper Rocks down to Duranbah due to unusually lacklustre conditions at the usual spot.

“Snapper and all of the points on the Gold Coast really rely on having a lot of sand for them to work well and, unfortunately, at the moment there is a real lack of sand, particularly at Snapper,” said Kieren Perrow, WSL Competition Director.

“Over the last week we have seen the sand begin to migrate around the point and we are confident that in the next few days we will have enough to run heats at the primary site.”

“Fortunately, we’ve got some really good conditions at our back up location of Duranbah around the corner so we will look to get competition underway there today,” continued Perrow.

“There are some decent four-to-five foot wedges going left and right, which will make for a really exciting opening day of competition for Men’s and hopefully Women’s Round 1.”

Australian star Owen Wright is up in the first heat against fellow Aussie Soli Bailey and American rising star Griffin Colapinto.

Heat 3 will see the return of 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater to full-time competition on the CT. Slater will take on the exciting Brazilian duo, Italo Ferreira and Yago Dora.

Defending champion Julian Wilson will hope to get his campaign to go back-to-back off to a strong start in Heat 5 but will have his work cut out against 2019 CT Rookie Seth Moniz and Wildcard Trials winner Reef Heazlewood.

All eyes will be on Heat 6 of Round 1 when reigning WSL Champion Gabriel Medina hits the water in his match-up with CT comeback kid and Australian Ryan Callinan along with 2018 WSL World Junior Champion and wildcard, Mateus Herdy.

The Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast and the Red Bull Airborne are on standby.
