Australian teacher shot dead in Kenya

AN Australian teacher has been shot dead in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

Fairfax say Gabrielle Maina was gunned down and her purse stolen while she walked along a road in the suburb of Karen, about 10am Thursday local time.

Ms Maina, originally from NSW, was reportedly working as the headteacher at Nairobi’s Hillcrest Preparatory School.

She had been in Kenya since September 2015.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has since confirmed that it is assisting Ms Maina’s family.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian woman who died in Kenya,” the statement reads.

“Due to our privacy obligations, we will not release further details.”
