Fire crews battle large fire at Canberra’s National Zoo and Aquarium

1:30PM | Firefighters have contained a large fire that ripped through a maintenance shed near the lions and tigers enclosure at the National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra.

The blaze is believed to have started in a maintenance shed shortly after midday.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency said the fire had “impacted on a number of sheds used to store maintenance equipment”.

The fire has since been contained.

“There has been a partial roof collapse with fire crews now working to fully extinguish the remaining fire,” the agency said in a statement at 1.13pm.

“The affected area is located near the lions and tigers enclosure with the animals being cared for by zoo staff.”

The zoo itself is still operating and is not impacted by the fire.

The on-site hotel, bungalow and tree house accommodation facilities have all been evacuated as a precaution.
