Residents detain thief caught in the act pilfering through cars

Two men have performed a citizens arrest after allegedly catching a thief pilfering through parked cars in suburban Melbourne.

Police said a man spotted the 18-year-old thief walking away from a car parked in the driveway of his Milford Court home in Meadow Heights at around 1.50am on Thursday.

The man called out to a friend and the pair managed to detain the thief and hold him until police arrived.

The Operations Response Unit, first on scene, took the man into custody and recovered a number of alleged stolen items.

Police are still working to determine the owners of a phone and a few pairs of sunglasses.

Broadmeadows police charged the man with numerous counts of theft from motor cars, going equipped to steal, handling stolen goods and other offences.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court today.

Police are appealing for anyone with information or anyone who may be missing their phone or sunglasses to report the matter to their local police station.
