Roads closed in Sydney suburb after fire destroys home

Police are warning of possible traffic delays on Friday morning after a home in Rockdale was completely gutted by fire.

Emergency services were called to the home on West Botany Street at around 2.40 am where they found the home well alight.

The only occupant, an 88-year-old woman, escaped with minor burns. She has been taken to St George Hospital for treatment

The fire was extinguished but the home was extensively damaged.

A crime scene has been established although authorities do not believe the fire was suspicious, instead that it was caused by a hot wheat pack placed on a mattress.

West Botany Street is closed in both directions between Bay Street and Ador Avenue, and is expected to be closed for several hours.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
