STEPH Gilmore has been penalised for interference and beaten in the opening heat of the Roxy Pro event at Snapper Rocks.
The five-time world champion led for most of the 30-minute first round heat before American rookie Alessa Quizon drew an interference on Gilmore to snatch the lead.
Quizon claimed the win with a two-wave score of 12.93 with Buitendag (9.93) and Gilmore (7.0) relegated to the sudden-death second-round heats.

Reigning world champion Carissa Moore will hit the water in heat three alongside Australian wildcard Keely Andrew and American Manuel Malia.
Reigning event champion and world No.2 ranked surfer Tyler Wright is set to surf in heat four while Sally Fitzgibbons is in heat five alongside compatriot Laura Enever and New Zealand’s Paige Hareb.
