Russia uncertain about Rio Olympics after ban

Russia will not appeal its full suspension from international athletics for doping.

The nation has been hit with the most severe punishment ever handed out by the International Association of Athletics Federation.

The news was made formal at a meeting of the world body’s governing council in Monaco.

It comes after Russia was slapped with a provisional suspension after a World Anti-Doping Agency report found systematic, state-sponsored doping and related corruption in the country that had “sabotaged” the 2012 Olympics.

Russia vowed at the meeting to work with foreign inspectors so that it could be welcomed back into international competition.

Rio de Janeiro hosts the Olympics in August 2016.
