Sacked Logan Mayor fronts court over drunk KFC run

Sacked Logan Mayor Luke Smith has told a court he’s highly embarrassed and remorseful after crashing his car while drunk.

Smith was three times over the limit when he hit a parked car and a tree at Meadowbrook on May 1.

He was on his way to KFC at the time of the incident, with the crash snapping off the front wheel of his white Honda.

The incident happened shortly after Smith was officially sacked as Logan Mayor after being charged with corruption and fraud.

His lawyer Nick Dore told Beenleigh Magistrates Court that Smith had turned to alcohol to deal with the stress of losing his job.

“He had just been sacked from employment. This was after some months of both police and media scrutiny in relation to other allegations,” Mr Dore said.

“He suffers from an alcohol abuse disorder to deal with stress.

“When he gets stressed he has the tendency to revert to alcohol.”

Smith pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving without due care and attention.

He was fined $1000, banned from driving for six months and ordered to pay $4500 to the owner of the car that he crashed into.
