Salvos desperate for volunteers for Red Shield Appeal

The Salvation Army’s Red Shield appeal kicks off next week, but the charity is still in desperate need for volunteers to help collect donations on the Gold Coast and Tweed Shire.

So far 1800 volunteers have signed up to help out but another 500 are needed.

The Salvation Army Fundraising & Public Relations Manager Rowan Johnstone said that local businesses have allowed volunteers to collect donations at over 50 collection points from Coomera to Cabarita. “Volunteers can have a fun few hours with family or friends by choosing a community collection point in their local area. We are collecting at all Woolworths Supermarkets, Bunnings Warehouses, Queensland Rail Stations, Salvos Stores, shopping centres and Gold Coast Airport and we need volunteers at all these”.

“You can do it with a friend, a family member, a work colleague. All you need is a smile and say thank you when someone makes a donation – we will provide you with everything else you need. Our volunteers tell us it’s one of the most rewarding things they do each year and we simply cannot raise the funds we need for our social programs without the support of our volunteers and those that donate during this our annual appeal “

The Salvation Army assisted 2,000 people through the homeless and accommodation support services over the last six months alone, including the Gold Coast Accommodation Service.

Last year the Red Shield Appeal enabled The Salvation Army to support over 500 people, every week, through recovery services throughout Australia, including the Gold Coast Recovery Service.

The support provided to people from these life-changing services can only happen through the money collected during the annual Red Shield Appeal.

“Whether it be through homelessness and crisis accommodation services, recovery and welfare services, The Salvation Army is there to give hope where it’s needed most”, Mr Johnstone added

The Red Shield Appeal door knock will run Monday 23rd May to Sunday 5th June 2016. To register as a volunteer, call 1800 885 332 or go to Red Shield Appeal Gold Coast Facebook page.
