SE Qld hammered by ex tropical cyclone Debbie

Heavy rainfall linked to ex-tropical cyclone Debbie is wreaking havoc across the Gold Coast this morning, however it’s only going to get worst, BOM warns.

Up to 200 millimetres of rain has been predicted for the hinterland and along the coast today and in to tonight, with gale force wind gusts of up to 80km/h possible along the coastline.

“This rainfall will likely be very intense at times, leading to a risk of severe localised flash flooding,” the weather bureau warned.

As a result, all schools have been closed as a precaution and businesses have been urged to close by midday.

“This weather will intensify throughout the course of the day, the thing we don’t want is for parents and children to be on the road in 90 km/h wind gusts or heavy rainfall,” Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said.

All state, Catholic and Independent schools from Agnes Waters to the NSW border including Metropolitan, North Coast and South East Regions are closed today, with Translink advising that school bus routes will no longer run.

Parents with children at Early Childhood Education Centres have been urged to check with individual schools about local arrangements.

Students attending Gold Coast Tafe have also been told to stay home, with the education centre closing.

Due to the torrential weather, Gold Coast beaches are closed. Forecasts predict a moderate to significant swell event on Friday. Lifeguards will continue to monitor surf conditions and forecasts relating to the beaches.

All Gold Coast Theme parks including Dreamworld, Whitewater World, Movie World, Seaworld and Wet n Wild have also shut their gates.

At the moment, the Gold Coast airport has advised that it is still open and operational this morning.

“We will continue to monitor the weather and provide any operational updates,” the airport said.

Motorists are being strongly reminded that if it’s flooded forget it. A list of current Gold Coast roads affected by the severe weather are listed below:
