A SEARCH for a teenage surfer who went missing in waters off Byron Bay yesterday morning will resume at first light today.

The 19-year-old Irish man was surfing with two others off Tallow Beach when they became caught in a rip just before 11am on Saturday.

Bystanders raised the alarm, prompting authorities to initiate a major search and rescue operation to find the trio.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called in, however only two of the men could be found.

A 26-year-old man was pulled from the rough surf unhurt, while a 20-year-old man was found slumped on rocks with minor injuries.

An extensive air and sea search had failed to locate the third man by sundown yesterday and the search was called off for the night.

It was expected to resumed around 7.30am this morning.
