Search steps up for missing ultralight west of Murwillumbah

An extra helicopter has been brought in to help look for an ultralight missing 15 kilometres west of Murwillumbah.

The 72-year-old pilot failed to return to Murwillumbah Airport on Tuesday morning.

Roger Fry, regional business manager for the Life Saver Helicopter which is being used in the search, told the ABC one man told him he saw a plane and heard an “impact” sound.

Dan Glover from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said two helicopters were using night vision to search.

A search helicopter from Lismore and a third chopper from RAAF Base Amberley are also expected to take part in the search.
