A massive air and sea search is underway at The Spit following reports a surfer may have found themselves in trouble this morning.
Emergency services were called to the sand pumping jetty after reports a a fisherman reported seeing the surfer tossed from his board around 8.00am and never seeing him resurface.
A police spokeswoman said there was a chance the man may have made his way back to shore, but they were not taking any chances.

Water police and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter are searching the area.
