Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for parts of NSW

UPDATE: A SEVERE thunderstorm warning has been issued for people in parts of the Maitland/Cessnock, Greater Newcastle and Gosford/Wyong areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 2:55 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Dooralong, Mangrove Mountain, Toukley, Wyong, Tuggerah and Gorokan.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east. They are forecast to affect Budgewoi, The Entrance, Wollombi, Nords Wharf, Bateau Bay and Lake Macquarie by 3:25 pm and Belmont, Wangi Wangi, Swansea, waters off Terrigal, waters off Swansea and Awaba by 3:55 pm.

Damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don’t walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 3:55 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Hunter, Metropolitan and parts of the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, Upper Western and Northern Tablelands districts.

EARLIER: A SEVERE thunderstorm warning has been issued for people in the Hunter, Metropolitan and parts of the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, Upper Western and Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that the Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Bourke and Lightning Ridge.

The next warning is due to be issued by 4:35 pm.

If severe thunderstorms develop in Sydney Newcastle Wollongong or surrounding areas, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area.
