Severe thunderstorm warning issued for parts of NSW

UPDATE @ 2.00 PM | The Bureau of Meteorology has just updated its severe thunderstorm warning for NSW.

The bureau says the severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the North West Slopes and Plains district.

Locations which may be affected include Tamworth, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Tambar Springs, Lightning Ridge and Collarenebri.

Orange, Mudgee, Bathurst, Katoomba, Walgett and Dubbo are also being warned to brace for heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding as well as large hailstones and damaging winds.

The weather bureau says if severe thunderstorms develop in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong or surrounding areas, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area.

EARLIER @ 1.00 PM | A severe thunderstorm warning has just been issued for parts of NSW.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Gunnedah, Narrabri, Walgett, Coonabarabran, Coonamble and Gilgandra.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don’t walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

The weather bureau earlier warned severe thunderstorms containing very heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts and large hail could be possible this afternoon throughout NSW.

Residents are being urged to keep their eyes on the radar.

The next warning is due to be issued by 3:35 pm.
