Man shot by police at Sydney shopping centre

UPDATE @ 1.05pm: Police have confirmed a critical incident investigation is underway after a knife-wielding man was shot by police at a shopping centre in Sydney’s north-west this afternoon.

Police say that at about 11.50am, emergency services were called to a shopping centre in Hornsby following reports that a man was armed with a carving knife.

They attempted to speak with the man, however following a confrontation, a number of shots were fired by police.

Four people were injured in the incident and have since been transported to Royal North Shore hospital for treatment of various injuries.

In a press conference on Thursday afternoon, it was revealed that the man was known to police and had been reported missing from a psychiatric centre yesterday.

People have been advised to avoid Florence & Lynda St & the Pacific Hwy.

EARLIER @ 12.15pm: A shooting has taken place at a shopping centre in Sydney’s north-west.

Unconfirmed reports suggest a man was shot by police after he lunged at them with a knife. He is believed to be in a critical condition.

Another three people were injured in the incident. All four have since been transported to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.
