“Significant incident” closes part of busy Gold Coast road

UPDATE @ 8.30 AM | A 34-year-old man has been taken into custody this morning, after the ‘significant incident’ that left an elderly man fighting for life on the side of the road at Nobby Beach.

Forensic police have been investigating the incident from overnight after the man was found unconscious in the grass next to the Gold Coast Highway by a member of the public around 3.30 am.

The man is understood to have suffered serious head, leg and pelvis injuries, and is now in critical condition at the Gold Coast University Hospital.


Police were calling for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward earlier this morning, but have since located a 34-year-old man from Southport.

He’s been taken in for questioning as investigations continue.

A car has also been seized in Burleigh Heads.

It’s still not clear exactly what happened.

EARLIER @ 6.30 AM | A 77-year-old man is fighting for life after a ‘significant incident’ on the Gold Coast Highway overnight.

He was found unconscious by a member of the public around 3.30 am, on the grass at Chairlift Avenue in Nobby Beach.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where they briefly assessed the man for significant head injuries before rushing him to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Forensic crash teams are now investigating at the scene, and are urging motorists to avoid the area on the Gold Coast Highway through Nobby Beach this morning.

It’s still not clear exactly what happened, but early inquiries suggest it may have been a hit and run.

Police are expected to provide further information later today.

Any witnesses or drivers with dash cam footage are being urged to come forward.

EARLIER @ 5.00 AM | EMERGENCY services have rushed to the Gold Coast Highway in Nobby Beach after a “significant incident” that’s left a person fighting for life.

It happened in the southbound lanes at the intersection with Chairlift Avenue around 3.30am.

It’s unclear exactly what has happened, with police only confirming a “serious crash” occurred.

Queensland Ambulance has confirmed one person has been rushed to the Gold Coast University in a critical condition.

Police have asked for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have dash cam footage to come forward.
