Six dead, 12 injured in California mass shooting

SIX people have been killed and 12 injured in a mass shooting in the United States city of Sacramento.

It’s understood police were patrolling the downtown area as bars and pubs were closing early on Sunday morning when they heard gunfire ring out near 10th and K streets.

Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said at a press conference a short time ago that officers rushed to the scene, where they found a large group of people gathered.

Six people died on the street, while another 12 were hospitalised with suspected gunshot wounds.

Police are still searching for the gunman.

Detectives are also probing whether videos posted to social media of an altercation before the incident may be related.

“We are currently working to determine what, if any, relation these events have to the shooting,” police said.

“We’re asking for the public’s help in helping us to identify the suspects in this”.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said words could not express his “shock and sadness”.

“The numbers of dead and wounded are difficult to comprehend,” he posted.

“We await more information about exactly what transpired in this tragic incident.

“Rising gun violence is the scourge of our city, state and nation, and I support all actions to reduce it.”
