POLICE are cracking down on drivers who perform illegal turns on the Gold Coast.
It comes after a recent operation on Christine Avenue at Varsity Lakes highlighted a real problem.
Sixteen drivers were caught performing illegal u-turns in less than 30 minutes – one every two minutes.

It has prompted police to remind motorists it is illegal to do a U-turn at traffic lights unless there is a sign saying that you can.
It’s also illegal to do a U-turn across a continuous single centre line, across double continuous centre lines or across a painted island in the centre of the road.
Officer-in-Charge, Senior Sergeant Andrew Frick, said making U-turns at traffic lights was dangerous, and made worse in this instance because the lights were inside a school zone.
“When you are doing a U-turn, you must give way to all other vehicles and pedestrians, even if other vehicles are facing a give way or stop sign,” he said.
“At intersections without traffic lights or at breaks in the centre island of the road, you must not do a U-turn if there is a no U-turn sign.”
