Smith wishing for luck of the Irish in ODI captaincy debut

ALEX HEINKE reports.

Australia will field a full-strength line-up for their one-day clash with Ireland, with Queenslander Joe Burns making his debut.

Burns will open the batting on Thursday in his ODI debut while Steve Smith will make his full captaincy debut.

Smith can call on several experienced players for help with Shane Watson, newly appointed vice captain David Warner and former ODI captain George Bailey all being named in the line-up.

Despite the long Ashes series, selectors have opted against resting paceman Mitchell Starc, with the World Cup star spearheading an attack also featuring Queenslander Pat Cummins.

The Ireland fixture is Australia’s first one-day match since winning the World Cup in February, and fits as a warm up for the upcoming five-match series against England.
