Smoke forces evacuation of Surfers high rise

Dozens of people have been evacuated from a Surfers Paradise high rise after smoke filled part of the building.

The drama started on the 21st floor of the Imperial Surf complex on The Esplanade around 7pm prompting several Triple Zero calls.

Residents and holidaymakers, many of them young families were forced out onto the street.

Four fire crews attended the scene along with Police and paramedics.

It’s understood food left on a stove in one of the apartments sparked the emergency, filling several floors with smoke.
