Smoke haze over northern GC to settle after today

If you live or work on the northern end of the Gold Coast you will have noticed the smoke haze hanging around.

The thick blanket is a result of a big hazard burn-off at Eagle Heights which covers about 720 hectares.

The Rural Fire Service has told myGC, the burn will continue into the afternoon before wrapping up.

“There’s still a lot of internal burning going on, so we’re just making sure our control lines are nice and strong so there’s no fire able to escape,” Acting Regional Manager Kaye Healing said.

Ms Healing said they have to choose their timing very wisely when it comes to controlled burns.

“We know things are drying out a little bit more than they have over the last number of years, so it’s a great opportunity to reduce the hazard in this area to protect those surrounding communities,” she said.

Rangers will monitor the fire as it smoulders and it’s likely a mild smoke haze will hang around for the next day or two.

“It will start settling down after today.

“While it causing some inconvenience for the community, the long term effect and benefits to the community are going to be felt.”

The fire service recommends people begin preparing their properties for the upcoming fire season.
