Socceroos tie with Japan in World Cup Qualifier

A penalty from Socceroos Captain and skipper Mile Jedinak in the 55th minute, saved the Aussies from defeat in Melbourne last night, keeping them on track for the 2018 tournament.

The Socceroos trailed Japan 1-0 at halftime in front of 48,460 fans at Etihad Stadium, with the home side looking flat and impatient after Genki Haraguchi’s fifth-minute opener.

A clumsy penalty from the Blue Samurai gifted Australia their equaliser in the second half.

It appeared to be all over in the 74th minute, as Yuto Kobayashi kicked for goal, which lead to Mat Ryan delivering the save of the match.

The draw was not an ideal result for Australia’s qualifying hopes, as they are likely to lose the top spot in their group as well.

Six qualifiers remain, with Australia still a point ahead of arch-rivals Japan.
