South Stradbroke music festival shut down after mass brawl

Police have been forced to shut down a music festival on South Stradbroke Island after a large brawl broke out among festival goers.

Extra officers had to be ferried to the island from the mainland to help bring an end to trouble.

Around 350 people were attending Gold Coast Vibez at Couran Cove Resort, billed by organisers as the “Gold Coast’s newest beach festival experience.”

Superintendent Scott Knowles says they were called to the island around 8.30pm after reports a number of intoxicated people starting fighting.

“As Police went and investigated that information it was certainly aware that large numbers of people had started brawling,” Superintendent Knowles said.

“The QAS tent that was there had been overrun by patrons, intoxicated people, the result was, we deployed a further 10 Police over to that island.

“We dealt with the event, we effectively shut the event down and had the attendees transported back to the mainland.”

Police are now investigating whether the festival organisers were in breach of their liquor license or their COVID-safe plan.
