Southport revealed as the worst suburb in Qld for car theft

Gold Coasters are being warned to ensure they lock up their cars after it was revealed Southport once again took out the top spot for vehicle theft in Queensland.

New RACQ insurance data showed almost 3,000 insurance claims were made in the past three years for cars stolen from Southport.

“This is not a top spot worth celebrating,” RACQ spokesperson Kirsty Clinton said.

“This time last year Southport was named at number one on this list so it’s clear car owners need to be doing everything they can to avoid falling victim.”

Ms Clinton said motorists could take simple safety precautions to lower their risk of theft.

“Always lock your car and ensure all windows are up when you leave it unattended,” she said.

“Wherever possible, park in a secure garage or park somewhere well-lit and well-populated.

“Thieves are often opportunistic so don’t tempt them by leaving valuables visible in your vehicle.

“Importantly, treat your keys like cash. Keep them on you and don’t leave them lying around.”

Ms Clinton said Toyota Landcruisers were the most stolen model in the State, closely followed by the Ford Falcon and Toyota Corolla.
