The Southport Sharks Swimming Club are celebrating after they managed to secure a $2000 donation from the Sunshine Automotive Community Fund.
The local sporting club beat out 31 other community groups in the running for the cash, after they secured the highest number of votes in the April round on the myGC.com.au website.
On Thursday some members of the club were on hand to receive the giant cheque at Sunshine Automotive’s Kia dealership.
Southport Sharks Swimming Club president John Stanford told myGC the club was thrilled to be announced as the April winner. “With this money we will be able to purchase some new equipment, help pay for our public liability insurance and organise a trip to a national carnival,” he said. “As a small club it can be really difficult raising money, especially when there are some big clubs and events also competing for donations.
“We currently have 70 members, ageing from 18 right through to 85. The money is really going to help us out, especially our pensioners.”
Mr Stanford told myGC after coming second in the first round of the funs, the club really rallied to get as many people as they could to vote. “We came together and networked. We reached out to everyone we knew – family, friends, and even past members of the club. It has been a great experience and has really brought us together.”
