Street Swags founder accused of fraud

The woman who founded the charity that fitted out many of the Gold Coast’s homeless population with beds they could take with them, is accused of fraud.

26-year-old Jean Madden was a Director of Street Swags before she was sacked in May.

The former Queensland Young Australian of the Year allegedly took control of the charity’s website, emails and bank accounts.

Madden will face a Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday, accused of racking up more than $440,000 in unauthorised expenses.

She allegedly posted a notice on the Street Swags website saying the organisation was closed until management issues were sorted after she was sacked.
