Superyacht berths to draw the rich and famous to the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast could soon be able to host the likes of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian on the water, or so says Mayor Tom Tate.

A proposed superyacht berthing facility got the transport committee’s endorsement at Council this morning, and could go ahead as one of the earlier projects in the Spit Master Plan.

It would be able to accommodate two 80 metres vessels at a time, and would be located near the fuelling area of the Southport Yacht Club.

It still has to go before full council for the final tick, though Mayor Tom Tate says it’s looking a sure thing.

“We have been advised that there are so many superyachts that just sail past the Gold Coast because there’s just no where to park.

“My idea is that our marine economy is growing, the superyachts – it’s growing… and so as it enters into the Spit Master Plan, the idea is that the state and the city will co-fund it, and the operator – we’ll put it out to Southport Yacht Club because they welcome so many yachts anyway.

“It’s a good location, and it’ll go to full council.

“I know the committee just voted unanimously so I’m very confident that it should get up,” Mayor Tate says.

He’s hopeful that by having more superyachts visit the Gold Coast, it won’t just be a spectacle for locals… but also an opportunity for international guests.

“It gives you the ‘paint the dream’ feel, and you go ‘wow look at that’.

“But also the attention of the influencer who sails on these yachts… like Kanye West and his wife.

“They do cruise on superyachts – my attitude is come to the Gold Coast, go down the road and rap and we’ll come down and listen to ya,” Mayor Tom Tate said.

The money side of things is under wraps ‘confidentially’, though the Mayor says the project has a ball park figure that will be split with the state.
