A surfer has miraculously escaped serious injury following a terrifying encounter with a shark near Ballina this afternoon.
The man was surfing at Sharpes Beach just after midday when a shark took a bite out of his board.
Police said the man was thrown off his board and sustained a small wound to his lower right leg.

The 25-year-old man managed to drive himself to Ballina hospital, where he remains, receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police have warned all swimmers and surfers that all beaches in the Ballina Shire have been closed for 24 hours.
A shark biologist will examine the bite marks on the board to determine the species involved.
