Surfer dies after being pulled from popular Byron Bay beach

A surfer has died after being pulled from the water at Byron Bay.

Emergency services were called to the popular Wategos Beach just after 2.00pm on Thursday, following reports an unconscious man had been pulled from the ocean by surfers.

An off-duty paramedic and local police immediately began CPR on the man before paramedics arrived on scene.

Despite their desperate efforts, the man could not be revived and died at the scene.

NSW Police say he has since been formally identified as a 57-year-old Byron Bay man.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
