One of the Gold Coast’s oldest surf clubs is set to be revitalised and brought into the 21st century under grand plans unveiled by the newly formed Surfers Paradise Business Innovation Group.
Members of the group, an initiative of the Surfers Paradise Surf Lifesaving Club, will become the ‘Corporate Owners’ and partners in a vision to build an iconic building in the heart of the tourist strip.
In a statement released today, the group, known as SP BIG, announced the iconic surf club would be transformed into a building which would be a “quintessential landmark for Surfers Paradise in the same way that the Opera House is for Sydney.”

Long-term Surfers Paradise Surf Club member and Deputy President Shane O’Connor said it was time to move the club into the 21st century.
“We want to move the Club into the 21st century with an iconic new building to expand the offering for our members, locals and tourists,” Mr O’Connor said.
“A new Club is long overdue and will greatly compliment the Council and State Government plans for new tourism infrastructure.
“Everyone recognizes that we have to continually upgrade the tourism offering to keep the Gold Coast at the top of the desired destinations list.”
The Surfers Paradise Business Innovation Group will be launched at a special lunch headlined by Australia’s top radio personality Alan Jones on Friday August 3.
The group says it will promote a big vision for tourism and development, develop legacy thinking for a strong and vibrant city and maximise the unique quadrants in Surfers, including:
1. Ocean Quarter – incl. coastal precinct, surf & yacht clubs and The Esplanade
2. City Quarter – incl. business, financial, retail and accommodation services
3. Village and Arts Quarter – incl. residential, retail, commercial, equestrian, art and culture (HOTA)
4. Marine Quarter – incl. connectivity and accessibility to make the best of all that is great in our City.
