There have been sad scenes at Sydney Zoo this morning, following the death of a chimpanzee.
The Zoo confirmed the news in a statement posted to social media on Friday, after visitors were stopped from entering the zoo this morning.
“Sydney Zoo is sad to announce the death of Mogli a beloved member of our chimpanzee troop,” the statement said.

“Mogli was found in the chimpanzee habitat this morning by our team.
“We are currently investigating the circumstances and once more information is known we will make a further statement.”
The Zoo said earlier media reports of an escaped animal are “completely false”.
“The team are in a state of deep shock and grief.”
