Teacher’s letter banning homework for family time goes viral

A teacher’s simple letter detailing why she is banning homework in her classroom has taken the internet by storm.

In the letter, posted to Facebook by a parent, the Texas teacher explains that there is no evidence to suggest homework improves a students performance and therefore she would rather kids spend their evenings interacting with their families.

“Dear parents, after much research this Summer I am trying something new,” the letter begins.

“Homework will only consist of work that your students did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year.

“Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance.

“Rather, I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success. Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside and get your child to bed early”

The letter has been shared more than 72,000 times and received hundreds of comments from people in support of the teacher’s policy.

“This is so awesome as it demonstrates how many parents and teachers would support this kind of policy! Especially for kids in Elementary school. It prioritizes family time and youth activity! I feel 8 hrs a day in school for kids this age is enough,” one user wrote.

“WOW. This is truly amazing,” wrote another.
