Teen charged over alleged 180km joyride to Gold Coast

A 15-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly taking a stolen Mercedes on a joyride all the way from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast.

The luxury vehicle was allegedly taken from the carpark of a Maroochydore shopping centre on Saturday.

The owner, a 68-year-old woman, raised the alarm after she returned to find the vehicle gone around 3.30pm.


Following ongoing investigations, police spotted the Mercedes travelling along Tamborine Oxenford Road at Wongawallan just after 11am on Monday.

“When an attempt was made to intercept the vehicle, it reversed into a police car, then drove forward into another car,” Queensland Police said.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

The car eventually came to a stop a short time later and the teenage boy was removed from the driver seat.

He has been charged with one count each of stealing, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, evade police, unlicensed driving, dangerous driving, obstruct police and possession of a knife in public.

The teen was refused police bail is due to face the Southport Children’s Court this month.
