Bail denied for accused Burleigh Heads jewellery thief

UPDATE: THE TEEN accused of a Burleigh Heads jewellery heist has been denied bail in Southport Court.

18-year-old Jake Smith has been charged with armed robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle after allegedly stealing a gold chain back in August.

The Court was told Smith went to Lara Jewellers and tried on a gold chain before fleeing to a nearby getaway car, being driven by another male, with the item in hand.

The shop owner chased him down and stood in front of the car in a bid to get the bracelet back.

It’s then alleged the driver ran down the owner, leaving her with a fractured pelvis.

The Judge refused bail and he’ll return to Court on December 15.

EARLIER: A TEENAGER’S been charged over a Burleigh Heads jewellery heist.

The 18-year-old handed himself in to police yesterday afternoon, more than a month after the dramatic robbery which saw the store owner taken to hospital in a serious condition.

It’s alleged he entered the store on Classic Way back on August 21 and tried on a gold bracelet before feeling the store on foot with the piece in hand.

He’s then accused of getting into a car being driven by another man and running down the shop owner as she tried to chase after him.

The woman suffered a fractured pelvis in the incident and was taken to Gold Coast Univeristy Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The Tweed Heads man was charged with one count each of armed robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle and is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court today.
