Teen charged over unprovoked attack on courteous Gold Coast bus driver

A TEENAGER will face court next month, charged with punching a courteous 69-year-old bus driver in the face in an unprovoked attack on the Gold Coast.

It’s alleged the 18-year-old got on the bus at Robina Train Station around 1.25pm on Thursday, December 14, and refused to pay for his fare.

But despite not having enough money to board the bus, the driver allowed the passenger on without paying.

However, as the teen was getting off the bus at Robina Town Centre, he started hurling abuse at the driver and allegedly punched him in the face on his way out.

According to witnesses, the 18-year-old then stood in front of the bus and took a photo of the driver on his mobile phone before running away.

The teenager from Varsity Lakes was arrested yesterday and charged with serious assault and evade fare.

He is expected to front Southport Magistrates Court on January 10.

The bus driver sustained a small laceration and bruising to his face and is expected to be off work for a week.
